Alabama’s First Hot Spot Brings Families & Community Together

The Hot Spot Studios Franchising
After spending more than three decades building successful careers, Carole and Travis Patterson were ready for a different pace of life. They wanted to be closer to family, enjoy semi-retirement, and begin a new chapter. Huntsville offered everything they were looking for; a growing community, strong family ties, and an opportunity to enjoy life on their terms. What they didn’t expect, was that their move would lead them to become the owners of Alabama’s very first Hot Spot Studio.
Carole spent more than 30 years as a medical social worker and director of social services, while Travis built his career in the demolition industry, eventually serving as vice president of a nationwide company. Carole’s family had deep roots in the area, and they had always planned to return to the South when the time was right. As Travis explained, “We kind of knew that we wanted to come to this area just because we have family here… we always knew that when we retired, we were going to go back to the South… and since we’ve gotten here, we have fallen in love with Huntsville.”
Travis intended to start a small handyman business to stay active, while Carole expected to enjoy retirement after decades of helping others. They had earned the opportunity to step away from demanding careers and focus on family and the next stage of their lives. Then, the unexpected happened. They discovered an opportunity to invest in themselves, and chose to build a business they could own together and become part of one of Alabama’s fastest-growing communities.
As the owners of Alabama’s first Hot Spot Studio, Carole and Travis have become community builders, creating a welcoming place where families, friends, coworkers, and neighbors gather to celebrate milestones, express their creativity, and make lasting memories. In turn, Huntsville has welcomed both the studio and the couple behind it, almost from the very moment they opened their doors.

Turning a Family Tradition Into a Business
Over the years, the Pattersons developed a tradition of visiting paint-your-own-pottery studios with their daughter and Travis’s mother, where they enjoyed spending time together, sharing an experience, and leaving with something that served as a reminder of the day.
Those visits left a lasting impression on Carole. “Every time my wife gets excited, and says, ‘I love this,’ and every time she has said that she wanted to own one one day.” Then, during a pottery outing in early 2026, something changed. “We walked out,” Travis recalled. “My wife said, ‘I want to own one of these one day.’ I said, ‘You know what? Let’s do it.'”
Carole immediately began researching pottery painting businesses and franchise opportunities, which led them to The Hot Spot Studios. “Once we first talked to Emma (VP Franchise Development) and found out the concept here, we didn’t look at any other craft studios at all,” Carole said.
The Hot Spot Studios offered a much broader creative experience. Pottery painting was only one part of the business. Candle making, slime, canvas painting, mosaics, birthday parties, camps, workshops, team-building events, and other hands-on experiences created opportunities to welcome guests of every age throughout the year.
For both Carole and Travis, that versatility immediately stood out. “I loved it because it had so much more to offer than just painting pottery,” Travis explained. Although they had occasionally discussed other franchise concepts over the years, they had never seriously pursued them. Owning a creative experience business felt different. It reflected something they genuinely enjoyed doing as a family rather than just another investment opportunity.
Carole noted that they were pleased with the startup investment compared to opportunities they had researched in the past. Combined with a concept they believed in and a conversation that left them excited rather than uncertain, the decision came together quickly. “After the first phone call, we had pretty much made up our mind that we were doing this,” Travis said.
Finding the Right Home in Huntsville
Travis and Carole also knew that where they opened would play a significant role in the studio’s long-term success. They focused their search on a specific shopping center in southeast Huntsville; a location they believed offered everything they were looking for…thriving retail, steady foot traffic, nearby restaurants, entertainment, and a rapidly growing population of families. “We knew what location we wanted to be in,” Travis explained. “We knew that we wanted to be in a particular shopping center.”
Travis explained that the location offered more than convenience. “It is in the most popular area of South Huntsville, and this area is growing crazily,” he said. “We did that for a reason.” The couple also recognized that Huntsville itself was changing rapidly. New neighborhoods continued to emerge throughout the region, major employers were expanding, and more families were choosing to call North Alabama home each year.
Carole pointed to several reasons they believed the city’s future was bright. “Space Command is moving to Huntsville… we’ve got NASA here… Huntsville is truly a booming city,” she said. “It’s the fastest-growing city in Alabama for sure.” Just as importantly, they saw an opportunity that had yet to be filled.
“We’re the only entertainment kind of venue like this… in southeast Huntsville,” she explained. “Everybody’s been so receptive and said, ‘Oh my gosh, this place has needed something like this for so long.’ They don’t want to drive downtown.”
That early confidence would soon prove well founded. Even before the studio officially opened, Carole and Travis felt they had made the right decision. They had found a growing community, secured the location they wanted, and positioned Alabama’s first Hot Spot Studio exactly where they believed it could make the greatest impact.

A Community Ready to Create
Long before opening day, the Pattersons already began introducing themselves to the people and businesses around them. They joined the local Chamber of Commerce, printed flyers, met neighboring business owners, connected with local influencers, and talked about their upcoming studio with just about everyone they met.
“Travis told every single person that he came in contact with,” Carole said. “Everybody that we spoke to at the restaurants, at the spots that we would frequent shopping… Travis would get into a conversation.”
They partnered with Huntsville Explorer before opening, hosted an influencer night featuring several well-known local content creators, and watched as word of the new studio spread throughout the community. “We’ve had a good start, and we’re very happy,” Travis said.
The day before their scheduled grand opening, Carole received a phone call from a mother looking for a place to celebrate her daughter’s birthday. When she explained that the studio wouldn’t officially open until the following day, the customer mentioned she would simply visit another pottery studio instead. “I said, ‘Hold up, wait! I don’t want you to do that. Come on in,'” she joyfully recalled. The Hot Spot Studios Huntsville welcomed its very first guests before its official opening day had even arrived. When their grand opening finally began, the response exceeded every expectation. “The studio was packed,” Carole said. “We celebrated our grand opening that entire weekend.”
Face painting, giveaways, refreshments, Chamber of Commerce members, and a steady stream of families helped turn the celebration into exactly the kind of welcoming event the Pattersons had hoped to create. Perhaps even more encouraging than the attendance was what people were saying. “Everybody loves it,” Travis said. “Everybody’s like, ‘This area needs this.'”
Carole heard the same message repeatedly from guests who were excited to finally have a creative destination close to home rather than driving across town. For the Pattersons, those comments confirmed that they hadn’t just found a good location; they solved for a genuine need within the community. After just a few weeks, the studio was already developing loyal customers.
Families returned for additional projects. Grandparents introduced grandchildren to pottery painting. Fathers and daughters spent quality time creating together. “We’ve had more grandparents in with their grandkids this summer than parents,” Carole shared. “And the dads and the daughters.”
Corporate team-building events were booked almost immediately, with the first reservation arriving within a day of opening. Travis and Carole worked closely with local businesses, creating personalized welcome signs for each group and collaborating with companies on social media to celebrate their visits. “It’s a variety of people from the office that want to come in and do something together,” Carole explained. “The response has been amazing. We have so much fun.”
That variety has extended to what guests choose to create as well. Pottery may have been the experience that first inspired the Pattersons to pursue the business, but their customers quickly began exploring everything the studio had to offer. Children gravitated toward slime, while candle making, canvas painting, mosaics, and other creative projects gave returning guests new reasons to come back and try something different.
One of their unexpected pleasures has been watching what people create. Neither came into the business with a professional art background, which has made seeing the creativity of their guests even more rewarding. They have watched customers transform blank pieces into deeply personal keepsakes, gifts, and works of art that often exceed their own expectations.
“I’m blown away sometimes by what people create,” Carole said. “These people freehand, and they just make these pieces so beautiful.” Some of their favorite moments happen days after the creating is finished, when pottery customers return to pick up their fired pieces.
Rather than simply handing over a project, Travis encourages guests to open it before leaving. “I want to see that expression” he said. Carole shares that enthusiasm. “The happiest times, honestly, are when people open their pottery bags in the studio and their smiles and they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, this turned out so much better than I thought it would.'”
Those reactions have given the Pattersons a firsthand view of what originally attracted them to the Hot Spot. The finished project matters, but so does everything that happens around it. Each visit offers a chance to spend time together, try something unfamiliar, and leave with something personal that carries the memory home.

Looking Ahead
Although Carole and Travis Patterson are still in the early days of operating Alabama’s first Hot Spot Studio, they are already thinking beyond the excitement of opening day. Like many successful business owners, they understand that building a thriving studio isn’t measured by a single weekend or even a single year. It’s measured by the relationships they build, the experiences they create, and the role they play within the communities they serve.
For the Pattersons, that begins with becoming more than a place where people come to paint pottery or make candles. “We really want to play up community involvement,” Carole said. “We want to be a resource for the community, and we look forward to growing those community relations.”
Their community partnerships extend well beyond retail. They have already begun working with local organizations, businesses, and civic groups while exploring opportunities with schools, Girl Scouts, senior centers, and nonprofit organizations. Every new relationship represents another opportunity to introduce people to the studio while strengthening their connection to the Huntsville community.
Looking ahead, their immediate focus remains on continuing to grow their Huntsville studio, but they see opportunities to expand throughout North Alabama as the region continues to develop. Their story is one that many aspiring entrepreneurs can relate to. After decades of successful careers, they found a new purpose, became part of a growing community, and proved that sometimes the most rewarding chapter of a career is the one you choose to own yourself.
